With songs as sharp as their looks, Jonathan Fire*Eater are poised to shake things up on their debut, Wolf Songs for Lambs. Relying on the Kinks, Rolling Stones, the Who, and Dave Clark Five for their musical references, JF*E add their own tales from the circus of urban horrors. Singer Stewart Lupton turns more than one clever phrase, and his delivery of songs like "These Little Monkeys" can whip a song into a wicked hip-shaker. "Station Coffee" has Lupton doing his best Jagger, while "When the Curtain Calls for You" casts a chilling tone, thanks to the whirling fog of a Farfisa organ. Jonathan Fire*Eater may take their cues from the British Invasion, but Wolf Songs shows they've got enough imagination to raise themselves above the wave of cheap imitations.
