Frank Black’s cover of ‘Hang On to Your Ego’ is a compelling reimagining of the song originally written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, famously included on the Beach Boys’ legendary 1966 album, Pet Sounds. Frank Black included his version of this track on his debut self-titled solo album, Frank Black, released in 1993, following the breakup of the Pixies. Frank Black’s rendition is infused with his distinctive alt-rock energy and quirky sensibilities. While retaining the melodic structure of the Beach Boys’ original, his version adds a raw, modern edge that reflects his post-Pixies sound. The arrangement is more stripped-down than the lush orchestration of Pet Sounds, with a heavier reliance on guitar-driven dynamics. Black’s vocal delivery is simultaneously earnest and idiosyncratic, bringing a fresh intensity to the contemplative lyrics. Includes two otherwise unavailable tracks.
